CARROTS

One of my many lives
was as a carrot.
Most people think vegetables
are not alive
and don't have feelings.

Carrots live!
We turn to face the sun
for a reason.

It hurts when we are cut
or eaten.

My life ended in a Smoothie!

A GHOSTLY PLACE

On our way to the library,
we drove past a state mental hospital
cemetery,
a bit of history.

A graveyard
for the mentally ill,
a monument to what used to be;

tombstones standing tall,
honoring old bones,
minds lost forever,
a ghostly place.

THE ENEMY

Now that our enemy
is invisible,
we no longer know
who to throw rocks at.

They spend their time
drinking wine,
while we
spend our time
crying.

I long for the good old days
when we knew
who was pulling our chain.

Everything
has changed.
There's no longer a way
to set things right.
The bell rings,
but no one comes out to fight.

MY BOOKS

No one reads my books any more.
People say my poems are depressing
and that all I do
is complain.

People tell me
they've got problems
of their own.

I guess they have a point.
Everyone is feeling down;
they don't need to read
the same sad story
over and over.

People say,
"Don't you have some positive poems
to lift our spirits?"

The answer is "no".
So my books remain on the shelves,
unread and unsold.
