ABORIGINALITY
In memory of Tuli Kupferberg

I sensed my aboriginality
When I perceived
That I and my fellow humans
Were inseparable
From so-called Nature.

Be it understood
That as a city child
My Nature was less
Trees and streams
Than sidewalks and sirens.

Later came the acid trip
When I realized all things,
Animate and inanimate,
Created and uncreated,
Had souls.

I remembered
My aboriginality
When I stood,
In my imagination,
On a shore

Watching them
With their funny shiny helmets
Disembark; and wondering
What gods are these
And why have they come?

Of course they laughed.
And I say, let them laugh.

APPRECIATION

This second rate piece of marble statuary
Stolen from some neglected garden
Adorns my hall, grins over it savagely
From above a cracked, bearded, evil, jaw.

I pass it, as I often must,
With feelings of fear, guilt, and self-disgust;
Along with the voluptuousness of possessing
A cherished work of art.

God forgive God.

    EXPLORATION

    Seems my thoughts
    Frequently rest
    Upon piles of cracked rocks.

    I wonder why that is.
