After

The United States cracked open
the other day,           cracked, like an
           egg gone rotten

And out of the cracks burst
the ghost of an
     eagle

Its diaphanous wings
     broken

It dazzled when it lived

yet never spiraled      high enough

But it flew
and it
could be
beautiful

     in the way
     something deeply

flawed

can still be
beautiful
